Edge House

Lake Winnisquam, New Hampshire

The Edge House is designed to occupy the border between two natural conditions: Lake Winnisquam and a dense forest to the west.  The design objective of the house was to separate and juxtapose the experience of these two landscapes.  A single demising wall is stretched along the center of the house, dividing the house into two halves. Contemplative and private spaces are placed on the west side of the wall facing the forest.  While social living spaces are placed along the east side facing the lake.  The wall bends and turns to articulate a series of distinct spaces along each side of the wall.  Throughout the day occupants will weave back and forth through the wall, oscillating between the two landscapes.

The demising wall is thickened to hold all the support functions of the house - closets, shelving, kitchen fixtures, washrooms.  This frees the north and south facades to be completely open to the landscape beyond.  On the south and north sides, the wall extends beyond the bounds of the house, and dissolves into the landscape.
