Meadow House
Becket, Massachusetts
The Meadow House is located in an open field in the Berkshires region of western Massachusetts. The building is designed as a guest house, tucked away from the main residence to provide guests with privacy and respite. The design objective was to provide uninterrupted views of the meadow from all sides of the house. In order to free up the facade, all of the support functions of the house were collected into a series of functional cores. These cores hold storage areas, a fireplace, walk-in closet, pantry, and bathrooms. The cores are positioned to naturally delineate a series of interior spaces between them.
The experience of the house oscillates between the intimate refuge of the support cores, and the open prospect of the living spaces. The thickened perimeter facade is comprised of a series of deep wood fins. The fins provide shade from the low morning and evening sun, and also direct views towards vantagepoints around the house. The depth of the outer wall is occupied by reading nooks, benches, desks, and seating for the dining table. These spaces project out from the house, allowing occupants to float above the meadow.
